There have been first reports of bats and a hedgehog. Frogs and toads have been seen crossing the roads heading for ponds, and the frogs have already mated and produced frogspawn, but as yet there have been no reports of toad spawn. Toad spawn is laid in a long string of pairs of eggs.
Signs that spring is here have been: honeybees on blossom, bumblebees foraging, and ladybirds are showing themselves in the undergrowth, where they are obvious to gardeners starting to do their weeding. Only one butterfly, a small tortoiseshell, has been reported outside but all the usual moths for this time of year, over 100 one night, have been taken in moth traps. Also in a light trap, there has been a great water beetle showing that they also fly at night at this time of year.
Soon, the first of our summer migrant birds should make an appearance and over wintering butterflies should be seen, so please keep your eyes open.
