It is sad that a small minority still do not pay for using the facilities, and don't see why they should. It is not fair on those that do pay, and if everyone had that attitude we would not have any facilities - Ah well, “There's nowt so queer as folk,” as the saying goes!

VILLAGE HALL NEWS

You will have seen that work has commenced on the refurbishment and alterations to the Village Hall. It has been a long time since it was first talked about but our patience has been rewarded and the contractor is now making great headway with the roof despite some pretty inclement weather.

Work commenced with the removal of the two trees which would have impeded progress. It is always rather sad when this has to happen but on a more positive note, I am pleased to report that cuttings were taken from the willow tree planted by the Women’s Institute to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of the National Federation and are now being nurtured by Dick Robinson, who is going to root them before they are planted out in a suitably damp place to become established before being replanted in new sites when they are identified.

Coincidentally, I was browsing through some old W.I. paperwork recently when I came across a newspaper cutting of a picture and report of the planting of this very tree in January 1966. Martin has promised to try and reproduce it which will not be easy since it is very ‘yellowed’ and of course the picture quality of press photos at that time was very poor. It may be of interest if you can discern those portrayed.

We shall have held the cake stall by the time this is distributed, hope we have a successful day. It has been decided to postpone the Christmas Draw for the time being as there are so many calls upon the goodwill and generosity of people at this time of year and we do not have a venue at which to conduct the Draw. It may be re-scheduled for the Spring.

Back row L to R Mrs J Ward, Mrs M Dennis, Mrs J Jackson, Mrs P Pearman, Mrs L Armstrong, Mrs D Moore.Tree planters, Mrs G Martin and Mrs M Gatenby with the little helper complete with spade (longing to have a go) Martin Pearman.

On behalf of the Village Hall Committee and the Fund Raising Sub-Committee, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support throughout the year. There has been a lot of hard work, effort and enthusiasm put in by a lot of people to help us raise much needed funds and we are very grateful to everyone who has provided help and attended the various events that have been held. We are still not finished and need to raise more funds to complete the furnishing of the Hall when the building work is ended. Donations, however small, would still be much appreciated.

A Happy Christmas everyone.
