Dear Editor.

I am not in the habit of voicing my opinion in the Newsletter, but, having read, what I find to be, unpleasant and offensive remarks, contained in Crossland’s Column in the Christmas edition, I feel it necessary, not only to question his remarks, but also his role as the Parish Council Clerk.

I am baffled as to why an individual uses the Newsletter as a vehicle to circulate, what I, and many others, consider to be oppressive and discriminatory views. To point the finger at certain groups of people, (very conveniently, those less powerful, more vulnerable and excluded), and declare that we must be nice and welcoming, only serves to widen the gap between the privileged and disadvantaged.

Discrimination, prejudice and stereotypical assumptions promote the stigmatisation of others. Labels such as foreigners, travellers, gays and lesbians are carelessly used to pigeon-hole people. Therefore, I wonder if the Column is the appropriate place for addressing such sensitive issues in such a biased manner.

The report that Philip Crossland refers to has been introduced because it is recognised that certain groups and individuals are socially excluded, and discriminated against. The report is raising awareness for those who are not mindful of how diverse our society actually is, and also looks at the possibilities of a more positive approach to building relationships.

It is a shame that those who judge others don’t realise that one’s life chances and conditions are often down to circumstances that are beyond one’s control.

If the intention was to just simply highlight the Community Cohesion Report, then why wasn’t that addressed in isolation, instead of using the Newsletter to voice personal opinions.

Final thought, does one gain equal status in society by belonging to the ‘exclusive’ white, heterosexual, middle aged, middle class, able-bodied group?

Surely one must look past the label and see the individual.
