June 1995

Already we’re halfway through the year, how quickly these months pass, we seem to finish one newsletter, have a breather then it’s time for the next one.

Has anyone noticed how tidy the grass looks down Southside Lane, once again it’s down to Bill Ward, he works tirelessly to keep the verges looking tidy. A big thank you Bill from the residents. I must also thank the lady on the tractor who cuts the grass around the village, everyone remarks on what a good job she does.

I seem to have had quite a few telephone calls concerning some of the children in the village. Young children are playing at the Sewerage Station at the back of Eastgate. Apparently they are walking on top of the walls of the structure. A fence surrounds the property to deter intruders but seemingly this is having no effect. The Water Authority were notified of our concern but after a visit to the site have stated there is nothing more they can do to make it childproof. They have stressed the dangers of children playing there and say that should a child fall off the wall into the works there is NO WAY that child would be able to get out, no-one would even know if a child had fallen in. If Brenda and Jim Dawson see any children around that area they do warn them of the dangers but they cannot be expected to be on the lookout all the time. THIS AREA IS VERY DANGEROUS! So parents please have a word with your child or children before we have a tragic accident, who knows it could be YOUR child!!

Also could the older children who use the playground please NOT wind the swings around the top structure! A parent rang to tell me that she’d taken her two young children down to play on the swings and they were wound around the top, result two very unhappy children. A workman’s help was summoned to retrieve the swings so the children could play there. I am aware that not all children who use the playground are local but can I ask anyone seeing anything untoward going on at the playground to please tell someone. Please let the swings hang loose so children of all ages can enjoy them. We are certainly not anti-children, all we want is for the children of the village to have a long, safe, happy and accident free childhood.

All articles for the July newsletter no later than 22nd June to:-

PHOTOCOPYING SERVICE

Unfortunately the photocopier with which I have been running a copying service from home for the last six years has given up the ghost and has been scrapped. I do not see the acquisition of a replacement copier in the foreseeable future.

THE VICAR’S RAMBLINGS

They now call Whitsun ‘Pentecost’, which I don’t think helps too much. But they also call it ‘The Birthday of the Church’, which I reckon is far more sensible. Until Jesus went back to his father in heaven, the disciples were always able to check with him whether what they were doing was right, or what their answer should be. But then he went; and they waited together until they could decide what to do next. And then the miracle happened. They were filled with the Holy Spirit - and the church was born.

Please don’t take this as being too mysterious an event, for I reckon we all know something about the Holy Spirit. First, for the disciples. it meant that they knew what to do next, and felt bold enough to speak up to anyone and everyone. And now, for us . . . Some of us talk of the Holy Spirit, and think of the Spirit as a direct channel for God’s power in this our own day. Others - most, perhaps - would say that they’ve got this conscience, which tells them when they’re doing something wrong.

And I reckon that that very conscience is the Holy Spirit at work in us. It’s not all that the Spirit does, by any means, but it’s a way all of us can recognise God still at work in us today. Because don’t forget, we can all ignore what our conscience says - and we all know, at least to some extent, when we’re doing something wrong.

The Church's Birthday, like any human’s birthday, marked the start of something different, not a one-off event in past history. The church is still there, worshipping God, trying to lead people into the truth of the Christian religion, prodding away at the conscience of the nation ( when it actually speaks up with a clear voice ); just like the Holy Spirit is prodding away at everyone’s conscience, whether they hear or not. God is still around us, still watching over us, still caring for us and leading us. My prayer is that more and more of us will recognise more and more of God’s work in more and more parts of our lives.

Stephen

VE CELEBRATION

The residents of the East end of Eastgate held a barbecue lunch to celebrate 50 years of peace. The men cooked the meat to perfection!!! while the ladies enjoyed the food and the role reversal. We entertained a genuine evacuee from Hull who told us many tales of Rudston during the war years. We listened to Vera Lynn music in the background while we tucked in to a super array of desserts and cheese. Many thanks to everyone who came, contributed so generously and made it an occasion to remember.

Audrey Forbes and Pat Stephenson.

THANK YOU

Elizabeth Harrison and all the family would like to thank everyone for their kindness and help following the sudden loss of Ken. Thank you for the cards, letters, flowers and donations received. We would especially wish to thank the Rev.Stephen Cope, Mr Clive Barnby, members of Rudston Church choir and Mrs Margaret Reed and everyone who attended the Funeral Service.

Thank you all.

NATURE NEWS

from Tony Ezard

Several more of our summer visiting birds arrived at the end of April and beginning of May and after a few days of warm sunshine must have regretted their decision to come when the weather turned cold again. With insects during the cold spell at a minimum much feeding activity was confined to the course of the Gypsey Race. The housemartins which were first seen on the 30th April seem to have managed and although numbers are few at the moment the swifts which were seen on the 7th May have stayed around and their numbers have increased. One of the most striking of our summer visitors showed itself on the bowling green on the 8th May. A male yellow wagtail, with bright canary yellow plumage, was seen by a host of bowlers.

A bird of prey was reported to be taking collared doves as prey on a regular basis. If it was disturbed it was just unable to pick up the carcase and fly off with it, so this ruled out anything as big as a buzzard which would have had no difficulty flying with this weight. The bird turned out to be a large female sparrow hawk. There can be a vast difference in size between the sexes of birds of prey with the female sparrowhawk being as much as a third bigger than her mate and capable of killing anything up to the size of a wood pigeon. Another bird of prey reported passing through had a very distinctive slow flapping flight, long broad wings with "fingers" at the ends and was almost certainly a female hen harrier.

Later arrivals of our summer visitors have been the garden warbler and the sedge warbler. The song of the garden warbler is easily confused with that of the blackcap but the harsh, strident notes of the sedge warbler are easily recognised.

A few more butterfly species have emerged recently including the other two "cabbage whites". Both the large white and the green veined white were first seen on the 2nd May and an orange tip butterfly was recorded on the 6th. Several species of moth have emerged including the first of the hawk moths - the poplar hawk - and on the 4th May a pine beauty moth was a new record for the area.

Tony Ezard.

RUDSTON SUNDAY SCHOOL - ‘THE ALL STARS’

The Sunday School has been meeting now for five months on the 3rd Sunday during the 9.30 Communion Service. We meet in the Old School. ( In June we’ll be in the Vicarage, however ! )

We begin with our special prayer, a song, which we sing in church later, and then split up for stories and activities. May’s story, in keeping with the theme of Rogation, was Jesus’s Parable of the Sower, and the children all planted sunflower seeds and asked for God’s blessing to make them grow. Then its into church for a blessing, a song and well deserved refreshments.

Numbers have been very encouraging, with at least 20 children each month. So - if you’re aged 0 - 12 and would like to join us, please do - you’d be very welcome.

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH

I would like to thank all the people who have reported incidents to me this month. One item was regarding a door to door person asking to sharpen shears, scissors and lawn mowers. It was noticed he wasn’t going to every door, the van number was taken, told to me, the police did a check on the number and found that he was a well known grinder. The police thanked me very much, as they were pleased to see Neighbourhood Watch was working in Rudston. If you see anything different from the norm in your area please let your co-ordinator know. Every property in Rudston has a co-ordinator who is working for Neighbourhood Watch in Rudston. If you can’t get in touch with your co-ordinator get in touch with me.

PARISH COUNCIL NEWS

Our new chairman is Mr J.P. Bell and vice-chairman is Mr R.D.Corner.

As most people will have read the detailed Free Press report on the last meeting, may I try to correct any false impressions gained, please?! Firstly, the lurid headline was based on a humorous off-the-cuff ( and off the record! ) comment. Secondly, I don’t remember anyone saying that the car park is never used. As most people will know, it is very well-used. It is especially useful just now with the number of weddings at church this year, but it is also used by visitors to the monolith etc. all the time. The car park Rates question is a little involved and I intend to deal more fully with it in the next issue. Hopefully, I should also have more information by then.

It was surprising that the Free Press should think our insurance costs are of interest to the rest of East Yorkshire ( ! ) but their figure of £53 covers the mower only for a year.

Something they did a bit better with was the separate report on Sir Ian MacDonald’s "campaign" for improved road safety measures on that part of the main road by the caravan site. He has the Parish Council’s support in this and is keeping it informed of progress. As the Free Press article states, the County Council are doing little more than provide new signs. However, they have sent some "Road Traffic Incident" cards to be completed in the event of further accidents. It appears that they "need" four accidents in three years before they will do more! Both the chairman and I hold some of these cards but hope they are not required, really.

And finally - One of our new members, Mrs Chris Gatenby, came up with an idea at the meeting, to which we all agreed. In view of the increasing number of new-comers to the village, a list of local services and amenities should be compiled and attached to the next newsletter. ( For instance, some people did not know of the mobile library ). Chris has kindly undertaken this task but would like suggestions from everyone please.

P.Crossland ( Clerk ).

KEEP FIT CLASSES

As I previously informed you, the keep fit class has two instructors. But due to the low attendance of Pat Boynton’s class, it has been decided that Hayley Brambles will now take all future keep fit classes.

The keep fit class is held in the Village Hall every Thursday evening, from 7.30 pm - 8.30 pm and costs £1.00. Why not come along and try it. It’s not only for the very young and athletic and I can guarantee it’s all good fun. It’s especially good for the newcomers to the village as it’s a fun way of meeting and making new friends - so come along and give it a go.

I should like to take this opportunity to thank Pat Boynton for her help and wish her every success with her other keep fit class at the Village Hall in Grindale.

RUDSTON PLAYING FIELD

The Annual General Meeting of the Playing Field was held on 3rd May. Elections were carried out as follows:-

Chairman - A.S.Ezard, Treasurer - P.Crossley, Secretary - R.Warters.

Committee Membership: Bowls - D.E.Corner, R.Warters. Cricket - B.Corner, S.Harrison. Football - D.Clark, R.Stork. Tennis - J & P Crossley.

Parish Council: A.S.Ezard, R.D.Corner. Village Reps: J.Bell, W.Laws and R.Overfield.

The only estimate received for the provision of a new bridge (between tennis courts and Bowling Green) for emergency vehicle and disabled access amounted to £20000. After discussion of the current financial situation and the availability of grants, the proposal was deferred sine die.

The secretary reported that an amount of £400 had been paid into the field’s funds over the last six years, being the proceeds from the use of the photocopier which regretfully had had to be scrapped.

R.Warters ( Hon Secretary Playing Field.
