No sooner had I realised that I hadn't got an April newsletter than I discovered I had also misplaced the copy of this column. I might find that tomorrow (!), meanwhile apologies for any repeats or follow-ups not pursued.
I think I mentioned the next meeting, though, to be held on Wednesday, 4th May. It is the "annual" one featuring election of chairman and vice-chairman. At the time of writing, there is no further news on the village hall, so I expect it will be at the Art Gallery, by kind permission of Mr. Tony Hogan. Notices will have appeared by the time this is read, and any change to that will be shown.
Immediately preceding that meeting will be our "ghost" event called the Annual Parish Meeting, which we are obliged to hold. This will be advertised for 7.15 p.m. when the Chairman and I would hope to be present, at least. Since the Parish Council discovered a few years ago that it was supposed to hold this Parish Meeting, it has dutifully done that, although it now seems a waste of time. That is not surprising and does not reflect on the village in any way, because everyone is kept informed of happenings through the year via this newsletter. Maybe other places are not as well served.
End-of-year (31st March) accounts have been completed, and show a very similarly healthy balance as last year. This was thought unlikely a short time ago, but due to two or three factors, now reflect a Gordon Brown-like prudence! After approval by the Parish Council, the accounts will be displayed in due course.
Talking of displaying notices, mention must be made of the new siting of the Long Street notice board, referred to in this column one year ago! It has made it easier to pin notices up, with no need to stoop down (unless you drop a drawing pin!), and hopefully it may be subject to less wind and weather as well.
For anyone interested in old photographs, a friend of mine came across one featuring his late grandmother, then Lizzie Witty, with some of her fellow schoolmates at Rudston School, circa 1910. He has given me a computerised copy showing both the photo and some written names on the reverse. Please contact me if you would like to see this copy, or I might be able to get another done
