MEDCALF

In reply to Mr. Gary Medcalf's e-mail in last month's newsletter, I find that in 1851 John Medcalf, his Great Great Grandfather, was the Landlord of the Red Lion Inn, which was demolished circa 1860, and was replaced with the Bosville Arms. His mother, Ann Medcalf, was his housekeeper, they were both born at Market Deeping. Lincolnshire. Also living with them was his nephew, William Long, aged 6 years.

Ten years later, in 1861, John Medcalf was married to Hannah who was from West Lutton, and they had Charles aged 5 years, John aged 3 years and Fred aged 7 months. William Long was still living with them.

At this point, John Medcalf was farming 150 acres of land in Rudston; the buildings and what is left of the house are in Long Street and are now the property of Mr. S. Dawson.
