Editor’s Piece. Hello and welcome to this month’s Newsletter. Well, it’s been a quiet month out there with not a lot to report. There was some mention in ‘Crossland's Column’ last month about the Neighbourhood Watch. Pete Smith, the local coordinator, has sent in an article, which can be found on page 12. I have added a contact phone number for Pete in the ‘Useful Numbers’ section at the back of the Newsletter. There is an article in this month’s Newsletter submitted by a former resident, Mike Ashford, now living in Canterbury, who I'm sure some of you will remember. Thanks to Tony Ezard for supplying the accompanying photograph. It always amazes me that when we have heavy rain Eastgate gets flooded near the bridge, just 20 feet from the Gypsey Race. One would have thought it would be a ‘simple fix’ just to pop a new drain in, with enough capacity, to reduce this flood risk. Work on the Village Hall is expected to have started by now, though it was delayed because of the contractor’s prior commitments. The various groups that use the hall for their activities will have had to find alternative venues, but I’m sure that the disruption will be well worth it in the end. All of those who use the village shop will be aware of the change in opening hours. I’m sure those who regularly use the shop will soon become familiar with them. Linda and Paul have said that the new opening times should in no way affect the service they offer to the village. They will, however, be closing for four days over the Christmas break. A village shop can never be expected to carry the range of products available in a supermarket. What it does stock are the everyday items that you might forget, or run-out-of, like sugar and milk, or a card for the birthday you forgot. There is a phrase that is often used nowadays, “Use it or lose it!” If we want the village shop to remain then we should try and support it. Martin Frankish. Editor. |
