BROADBAND?

I
recently received an email, from a Rudston resident, questioning broadband availability in the area. I advised him that there are quite a number of broadband users in the village. Unfortunately, as Rudston only has a limited number of 'lines' coming from the exchange at Kilham, many people find they have 'shared lines'.

Modern line sharing is done using a Digital Access Carrier System (DACS), a device that allows two ordinary phone lines to be 'squeezed' down a single copper pair. Normally, each phone line requires its own copper pair all the way to the exchange.

DACS limits the amount of information that can be transferred over your phone line.  The maximum speed of data transfers is 33.6kbps, which is not really suitable for a high-speed broadband connection.  If this is your maximum speed using 'dial-up' then you most certainly have a DACS fitted to your line.

SURVEY It would be interesting to see what problems, if any, that people in the village have had in obtaining a broadband connection. Please take the time to fill out this survey.
