The Octon 'Do': The Rural Christian Community Network ('serving God's people in and around the North Wolds') will be having its annual 'Do' on Wednesday September 14, 7.30 pm, at Octon Crematorium, followed by refreshments in the hospitality suite. What is it? - worship, readings, prayers, presentations, and then food, fellowship and chat. They have been enormous fun in the past couple of years, and this year we will have the Revd Stephen Burgess, Chair of the York & Hull District of the Methodist Church as our principal speaker. Do come to the do! (Stephen is RCCN co-ordinator, in case you were wondering…) Stephen is away (work) September 16 & 17, and September 20 to 22. PCC: Meets on Monday September 19, venue to be confirmed. Advance Warning: The Bishop of Hull will be with us for Harvest Festival on Friday October 7; service at 7 pm, supper afterwards!
THE VICAR'S RAMBLINGS
We're a funny lot, aren't we? Some of us get all excited by Manchester United, others by Liverpool, and others think football is a complete waste of time. Some folk don't think it's been a decent church service unless they've had a good sing, while others prefer peace and quiet. Some like tea, some prefer coffee, others would rather have a beer… In a way, that's the beauty of us - we're all individuals. Because some of us like Marmite and others don't, so we have to have more than one sort of sandwich at a 'do'. White and brown bread, pork pie and the vegetarian option…
All of this means that there are three different types of 'right'. There is the right that is right for me, no sugar and a drop of milk, and Bradford City; but there is also the right that is right for all of us, don't drive on the pavements, don't commit murder, and don't steal. But the third one is the difficult one - it's the right that people believe, while others believe something totally different, such as me believing it is right that Jesus is the Son of God, and there is no other way to salvation. The hard part in the world at the moment is believing that you are right and someone else is wrong, and yet managing to live side by side. Yet it's got to be done…
